commissioned assignment
silkworm farming in Baccau, Timor Leste
Built on an abandoned army base, East Timor's first silkworm farm now provides employment and income for several villages in Baucau Province. My assignment was to capture the life cycle of the farm, from growing mulberry crops to feeding the silkworms, to harvesting the raw silk, to training village women in spinning and weaving exquisite silk products for sale. I spent two days on the farm with volunteers from Australian Volunteers International and their Timorese farmer and weaver colleagues.
